"Absence of Father Figure and the Role of Social Emotional Learning" By Aditya Singh

The absence of a father can significantly shape a child’s behavior and future. Studies show that children without an active father figure often face challenges such as lower academic performance, reduced self-esteem, and increased emotional vulnerability. A report by UNICEF states that children from single-parent households are 70% more likely to drop out of school.

In Jharkhand, many children attending government schools face similar challenges, often due to migration, economic struggles, or social issues. These children may struggle with concentration, lack of discipline, and feelings of neglect, impacting their overall growth. Emotional gaps can lead to aggression, withdrawal, or difficulty in forming healthy relationships.

To address this, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions are useful. SEL focuses on building emotional awareness, empathy, and decision-making skills. For example, activities like storytelling or role-plays can help students express their emotions and understand others. Group discussions about role models or father figures in their lives can also be encouraging. Additionally, mindfulness exercises like deep breathing can reduce stress and improve focus.

By fostering a supportive environment in Jharkhand’s government schools, SEL can help children overcome these challenges. It empowers them to build resilience, create meaningful connections, and realize their potential, regardless of family circumstances. This holistic approach can be a game-changer in ensuring a brighter future for such students.
